Apartment in Florence
The merging of two apartments within a 1960s building has given rise to a new residential unit with a distinctly contemporary character, designed for an Italian-American family relocating from New York.
THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN TWO LANGUAGES
The project takes shape from the encounter between a New York-inspired language, expressed through the generous scale and fluidity of the spaces, and a distinctly Tuscan sensibility, conveyed through the materials, proportions, and selected pre-existing architectural elements.
Two originally simple apartments are thus transformed into a highly distinctive home, where the New York character of the open-plan layout engages in dialogue with Tuscan tradition.
The timber roof truss, Carrara marble, wooden flooring, and bathrooms clad in Rapolano travertine introduce an authentic materiality deeply rooted in the local context. The careful selection of materials thus reinforces the contrast between a metropolitan atmosphere and a distinctly Tuscan identity, which serves as the guiding thread throughout the entire project.
THE PLAY OF DOUBLE-HEIGHT SPACES
A spacious living room welcomes the occupants and opens onto a large terrace. The living area connects to the kitchen through a generous opening, while an intervention in the attic has created a striking double-height space that brings the original timber roof truss into focus.
The relationship with the attic becomes one of the defining themes of the project. The interplay of double-height spaces is repeated throughout the home, creating framed views and visual connections between its different levels.
Walkways and overlooking spaces create a continuous relationship between the upper and lower floors, enhancing the perception of space.
The staircase, designed by Benaim Studio and handcrafted by a local metalworker in iron and wood, was conceived as a light, almost suspended element, capable of integrating seamlessly into the volume without weighing it down.
